Il avait fallu plus d'une semaine au convoi provenant de la basilique Saint-Titus, à Rome, pour rejoindre l'abbaye de Noirlac, sise au fin fond de la campagne du Berry. De nombreux sachets d'herbes odorantes avaient été glissés dans le cercueil avant le départ, et le corps avait été préparé de façon à ralentir la putréfaction. Il fallait éviter que la dépouille n'empeste tout le long du chemin le cortège de cardinaux, d'évêques, de clercs et de fidèles ayant suivi la charrette sur laquelle le cercueil avait été installé.

La grande porte à deux battants de l'abbaye s'ouvrit en grand pour laisser entrer tout le monde. Les portes de l'abbatiale étaient ouvertes également, et de chaque côté, les moines et moniales cisterciens formaient une allée que les porteurs du cercueil emprunteraient pour entrer dans la plus grande des églises cisterciennes. Une fois à l'intérieur, il faudrait longer la nef, contourner l'autel, et emprunter l'escalier pour descendre dans la crypte.

Là, le long d'une somptueuse allée fleurie, les sépultures des moines et oblats cisterciens s'étalaient. Certaines consistaient en une simple croix gravée d'un nom et de quelques mots. D'autres étaient de véritables monuments de pierre, construits pour abriter le cercueil de cisterciens importants. Au bout de l'allée, un sarcophage encore ouvert, soigneusement préparé par un maçon réputé et apporté la nuit précédente, attendait.

Eloin s'approcha du cercueil lorsqu'il fut posé devant le sarcophage.
